Austria (German: Österreich), officially the Republic of Austria (German: Republik Österreich), is a landlocked East Alpine country in the southern part of Central Europe. It is composed of nine federated states (Bundesländer), one of which is Vienna, Austria's capital and its largest city.

Austria is bordered by Germany to the northwest; Czechia (the Czech Republic) to the north; Slovakia to the northeast; Hungary to the east; Slovenia and Italy to the south; and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. Austria occupies an area of 83,879 km2 (32,386 sq mi) and has a population of about 9 million people.

Tourism in Austria forms an important part of the country's economy, accounting for almost 9% of the Austrian gross domestic product. Austria has one guest bed for every six inhabitants, and boasts the highest per capita income from tourism in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. As of 2007, the total number of tourist overnight stays is roughly the same for summer and winter season, with peaks in February and July/August. In 2007, Austria ranked 9th worldwide in international tourism receipts, with 18.9 billion US$. In international tourist arrivals, Austria ranked 12th with 30.8 million tourists.

Vienna is by far the country's largest city. Graz is second in size, with near 300,000 inhabitants, followed by Linz (over 200,000), Salzburg (155,000), Innsbruck (130,000), and Klagenfurt (100,000). All other cities have fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. Standard German language is used in formal contexts across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as well as among those with significant German-speaking minorities: Italy, Belgium and Denmark.

Tourism in Austria - Travel & Leisure

Welcome to Austria Travel & Leisure! Austria is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, attracting tourists not only in summer and winter - which in the mountain regions is almost as busy a season as summer - but also in the in-between seasons. Visitors are drawn particularly from neighboring Germany, as for them there is no language problem. It is the scenic beauties to be found in all the Alpine republic's provinces which are the main reason for inducing large numbers of tourists to spend their holidays in Austria year after year. But, in addition, Vienna (Wien), the historic capital, and the beautiful city of Salzburg, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Linz, Graz, Innsbruck, Alpbach (Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau), Klagenfurt, Zell am See, St. Anton am Arlberg, Kitzbühel, Lech-Zürs am Arlberg, Mayrhofen, Sölden, Ischgl... are among the most popular tourist attractions the country has to offer. Austria is situated in the south-east of Central Europe. It is predominantly a country of upland areas and high mountains - the Eastern Alps occupying a good 60 per cent of the country's territory. The River Danube flows for about 350km/217 miles from west to east through the northern part of Austria. With an area of 83,855 sq.km/32,376 sq. miles Austria is one of the smallest countries in Europe. Austria has a cool temperate climate of an Alpine character, consistent with its position on the south-eastern edges of Central Europe and its mountainous terrain. Towards the east the climate takes on increasingly continental characteristics.

Best places to visit in Austria

To list all of the places to visit in Austria would be impossible. This is a spectacular land of beauty with an endless variety of landscapes. From rugged snow-capped mountains to white ski resorts and turquoise lake waters, Austria can satisfy every traveler’s needs. Vienna attracts a major part of tourists, both in summer and winter. Salzburg receives about a fifth of tourist overnight stays compared to Vienna, which ranks it 2nd in the summer season. In the winter season, a number of winter sport resorts in western Austria overtake Salzburg in the number of tourist overnight stays: Sölden, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Ischgl, Sankt Anton am Arlberg, and Obertauern. Visits to Austria mostly include trips to Vienna with its Cathedral, its "Heurigen" (wine pubs) and romantic Waltz music events. Worth a visit are Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, Innsbruck, capital of Tyrol surrounded by the Alps, Linz, capital of Upper Austria with the largest Cathedral of Austria and modern cultural highlights, and the Danube valley with its vineyards, for example the Wachau or Dunkelsteinerwald, which are between Melk and Krems. In the western part of the country the province Vorarlberg reaches the Lake Constance, in the eastern part Neusiedler See. The three most visited landmarks in Austria are Schönbrunn Palace (2,590,000 visitors per year), Tiergarten Schönbrunn (2,453,987 visitors) and Mariazell Basilica (1,500,000 visitors). Of great touristic importance are the Austrian skiing, hiking and mountaineering resorts in the Alps as well as family-friendly recreation areas (e.g. the Witches's Water in Tyrol). The same applies to the numerous Austrian lakes (e.g. Wolfgangsee and other lakes in the Salzkammergut east of Salzburg or Wörthersee in Carinthia) and castles. Stretching over Vorarlberg and Tyrol, Ski Arlberg is the largest connected ski area in Austria and one of five largest ski areas in the world.
